It was a small plastic box with two rocks taped on top. It was no surprise then when I opened the box...it was also full of rocks, different colors, different types. I absolutely loved this gift! For it was so much more than just rocks...it was...the essence of being a little boy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I looked at these rocks, it brought up memories of my "little boyhood." Playing in the dirt...catching bugs and snakes...finding cool rocks. I place a high value on those rocks as did my son when he gave them to me. "Here Dad, here's some really cool rocks...Look at them! "&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I started wondering how many older guys would still find amazement with these rocks or just look at them as "only rocks". There is so much that I do not know about in this world, but...I do know that there are treasures all around for us to freely enjoy. Some are these sparkly...colorful...different shaped rocks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I see a grouchy old guy, I ask myself, "What happened?" I try not to judge him harshly, as I do not know how or what life has given him but...I'd rather have the heart of a little boy than the heart of a grouchy old guy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've recently met someone in another &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;country&lt;/span&gt; who is like one of these "rocks." It's funny how dogs can bring people together. This individual has a true desire to learn all he can about dogs, their capabilities, their wonders... In comparison to the amount of people in the world, there are not that many people who have a true, honest desire to learn. So finding this guy was like finding a really cool rock...something of value.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have treasures all around us, everyone does. As a rule, they get harder to see as you get older. Your day is full of these treasures. Can you see them? When I was my son's age I looked at dogs as "cool treasures." I just wanted to be around them. Not for any other reason but to just be with them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The natural progression of life and certain people have tried to rob me of these simple joys of just being with a dog. There are many cruel and empty souls walking around out here. Souls who look at dogs as only a tool - to be discarded when no longer needed or useful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me...I like to keep the childlike joy close at hand when viewing dogs. Just like that bunch of rocks - they are common, but... Had I ability, and could reach the nation's ear, I would today pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; its' crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look around, people... open your eyes! Do you see what is happening all around you? The above quote was sounded out 157 years ago by a man named Frederic Douglass. Yet I believe it is more applicable today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A lot of my articles will find yourself asking, "What does this have to do with dogs?" Well... plenty. When people change... dogs change. When our country is strong... our dogs are strong. When our country is weak... our dogs are weak. So how does a great country like ours grow weak? One individual at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The wisest author ever has told us that, "the love of money is the root of all evil." Apply that to the economic bailout recently passed into law. Apply that to our government. Apply that to yourself. Everything comes down to one man... one woman. One person can,in fact, change something for the better. One person can indeed change something for the worse. But as more and more people become selfish and only care about themselves, society has no other avenue to take, but down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recently in Kentucky, we had an ice storm which caused extensive damage and many were without electricity for an extended period of time. My family went 18 days without power. This situation actually provoked many into helping others. Then, those that were helped, in turn helped others. People were thankful and considered how their neighbors were doing. Many, many acts of kindness were sincerely committed... one individual at a time. Funny thing is, my family enjoyed many aspects of not having power for so long.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hard times bring out the best in people... and undoubtedly the worst. And as the hand of time moves forward, rest assured there will be many hard times for America. How will she respond? How will this country react? Most assuredly, it will be measured... one individual at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you ready for the hard times? How will you affect America? Don't be fooled... though you are only one person... You... are.... America. You are part of the country. What you do matters. Who you are affects others around you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So... look in the mirror and ask yourself, "Am I an American?" Or are you just into yourself? Everybody makes choices... good or bad. Our future will be the end result of these choices. It means, &lt;em&gt;Always Faithful. &lt;/em&gt;Not sometimes, not most of the time, but all of the time..."Always Faithful."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In sharp contrast are evil men. For they cannot say that they are faithful to anyone but themselves. They pretend to be faithful. They say they are faithful. Some have even worn the uniform of a Marine but...they do not , nor can they possess this attribute of, "Always Faithful."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These words do, however, apply to dogs in the purest form. The other day as I was walking off a very muddy field with a good friend of mine, all this drifted into my mind. We had just finished training with our dogs in this mud. Good ole' sloppy, squishy, wet , Kentucky mud. This friend of mine, who is very faithful to his dog, could have easily stayed home in the comfort of a dry, warm house. But he knew that spending the day in the mud would benefit his dog...so he came.He is faithful to his dog and in return, his dog is "always faithful" to him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a true Marine says, "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;Semper&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;Fi&lt;/span&gt;", it means something. They are not just words with no meaning. When you wake up your dog at 3:00 a.m. to go out in the cold and rain, and he willingly goes without hesitation...this means something. He is showing his faithfulness by being faithful. His day to day actions prove that he is indeed, "Always Faithful."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my life I have met more than my share of evil men. They were very different in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;a lot&lt;/span&gt; of ways, yet they all shared this same attribute...they were not faithful to anyone or anything. They are like blood sucking parasites that go along with the host for a ride. They get their fill...leave their diseases behind...then they move on. This is what makes them evil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet my dog...your dog will go out on any muddy field and walk with you, thoroughly enjoying himself with only your presence. &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;Ahhh&lt;/span&gt;, the simple joy they must feel by being faithful. The contentment they have by serving.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Evil men, on the other hand, never experience this "contentment" from giving, as they are always taking. Not even comprehending that they are only destroying themselves. They do not take heed when GOD says that it is better to give than receive. In the end...they will pay for their deeds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for me, give me a faithful dog...a good friend...and a muddy field. That morning, when the pup opened it's young eyes, it had no idea what was in store for him.  He did not know that he would be going on his first plane trip and leaving behind all that he ever knew.  Nor could her predict the two hour car ride from the airport.  He did not understand or comprehend that in the morning he would be in one state, and in the evening he would be in another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My son Joe has been anticipating the arrival of this pup for quite some time.  He is full of expectations and hope for this young dog.  As I watched this new pup willingly follow him down the driveway,  I thought how pure and simple  the human-dog bond can be.  They spent the next three or four hours just walking and hanging out in the woods getting to know each other.  Building the foundation of a bond that will last a lifetime.  Forging a love that will cause both of them to protect and watch out for each other...and also, just as important, to simply have fun together.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I always tell folk that "we train from the inside out."  With so much chaos and evil going on in the world, it did my heart good to see that little tail wagging away next to the legs of his new friend.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All was okay...all was right in the world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My son is seventeen years old and still looks at alot of things in the world with young eyes.  He has not been sucked in to the sludge of life that we adults accept as normal.  It happens to all of us as we grow up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But why do we have to get so wrapped up in useless worries?  Why do we put value on things that are not worth anything?  Why don't we open our eyes and look around us...and see, really see what's there?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I admit, I wallow in the sludge of life from time to time.  But...I always wash it off sooner or later.   Seeing the beginning of a lifelong friendship - like I did today, that is like a crystal clear, fresh waterfall washing away the built up sludge of life that was on me. "Searching for Sasquatch." Using dogs to track this elusive creature that some say exists, while others say...prove it.   Well...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let me tell you of something that happened to me when I was in Northern Minnesota with my dog.  Now, you might not believe me but... every word of this is true.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We were hiking in a pretty desolate place, simply enjoying the quiet and beautiful scenery. Oliver and I, that's my dog, did this from time to time. We enjoyed getting away from so called civilization, the rat race and mostly... a lot of the people. It is not so much the buildings, cars, pollution and crowds of people, it's the characters of the people that are in the buildings, driving the cars, polluting the land and that make up the crowds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have no scientific way of proving this statement but... I believe people - on average - are getting worse and worse. Meaner, more prideful, and over all treating each other badly. So Oliver and I , we go out there and soak in what's real, what really matters.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's when it happened. We were walking down a trail as we rounded a bend... Bigfoot was standing right in front of us! Now, out of the 3 of us, Oliver, Bigfoot, and myself, I appeared to be the only one who found this one of a kind encounter shocking. Oliver did not bark, run away,  nothing. In fact, he actually looked at this gigantic piece of carpet and wagged his tail. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then something happened that I will never forget.  This thing... Bigfoot, spoke! English too! He looked down at me... looked me in the face and said, "Hey." I absolutely did not know what to do so I said ," Hey."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now everybody has heard of Sasquatch... Bigfoot.  There are countless eyewitness accounts, sightings.  There are fuzzy photos, video tapes and even weird sounding audios. We even have some footprints to analyze but... no actual proof that they, "Sasquatch" exists.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Oliver and I are actually standing in front of one now! And speaking with him... or her. I haven't figured that out yet. Finally,after what seemed like an eternity he said, " Hello, my name is Dick." I said, "Hi, Dick, my name is Tony and this is Oliver, my dog."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He then goes on to explain to me how he knows that many people are searching for him and the other &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;Bigfoots&lt;/span&gt;. He explained to me how that they just choose not to associate with mankind. I did not know what to say, except to say, "That is why I am out here with Oliver, to get away from the two-faced people I do not care to be around." Dick says, " I know, I have seen you and Oliver out here before."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh, by the way, all the stories about how bad Dick... I mean, Bigfoot, stinks... all true. Dick tells  me that the "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Bigfoots&lt;/span&gt;" are all well aware of all the advances and progress that mankind has made. They just choose to stay away. They want no part of a society overflowing with hypocrisy. Two-faced people stabbing each other in the back. Smiling to your face and cowardly cursing you behind your back. Lying to you... stealing from you... spreading lies about you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"You see," he says, "So many people are filled up with pride that they think they are something, when in actuality... they are nothing. They think that they are better than everyone else. And if you think I stink... that stinks!  They just can't seem to keep their noses out of other people's lives.  They don't have much of a life themselves, so they try and get into other people's lives."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dick gets a smile on his face and says, "Out here in the bush we respect each other. We don't lie or pretend to be something we are not.  We do not talk bad about other &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;Bigfoots&lt;/span&gt; to other &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;Bigfoots&lt;/span&gt;.  If another needs a helping hand we gladly offer it. We find it honorable to help each other out."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dick looks me square in the eye and says, "We realize that our Creator is really the only SOMETHING in this world.  We are his creation and we are all created equal.  We like it out here in the bush because we get to enjoy all of the simple treasures that he has made."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I said, "Dick, for a big, ugly, smelly, hairy creature... that was beautiful. I have to live among those types of people you just described. That's why I come out here to the woods."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We both agreed that most likely those people will not change how they are or how they treat others. When they gather together -3 or more - they feed off of each other's "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;stinkiness&lt;/span&gt;." It is actually quite sad. They are actually quite sad.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then Dick says that he has to go. Him and some other &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;Bigfoots&lt;/span&gt; are getting together and picking the ticks off each other.  A real bonding experience, he says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I said, "Dick, ticks and all, you probably have it better living out  here in the bush then to deal with all the hypocritical people of today's society."  He just looked at me and smiled.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So he petted Oliver and said good-bye to us. He said to me, "Tony, don't take these people seriously... they are just like ticks. Blood sucking, disease spreading, good for nothing creatures. Pick them off... keep on living."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I smiled and waved. It wasn't until later on, that I realized what a "controversial" figure this guy was in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land. But when I first met him, I got hooked on the type of training he was showing me. I remember saying to myself, " I love this!" It made so much sense to me. Pure and simple. It felt very right. But I also asked myself, "Why? Why aren't there more people training here? " I remember how odd that seemed to me, considering what great stuff I was experiencing and learning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As time went by I heard others in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land speak very badly of this guy. They said all kinds of things like, "He was crazy" - "Did not know what he was doing" - "Was one of the worst trainers in the country". It did not make sense to me though. I had just spent one of the greatest weeks ever in my life at this "crazy" guy's place. Why did so many &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; people hate him? This crazy guy indeed did things opposite of them. But who's way was the better way? The vast majority of people in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land said this crazy guy was wrong! Was it possible that all of "them" were wrong instead?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As time went by, it became clear to me why so many were against this guy. This type of training is not for everyone. First off, it is a physical thing. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete, but you do have to be able to get around well. You can't be afraid to get dirty, wet, cold, hot scratched, bit, bruised... You have to be able to function in the natural world around you. Second, it will test and build your character. This is the main reason I fell for this type of training. One is just not dog training...but...living...with dogs. You not only learn about your dog, but learn more about yourself...who you truly are. Not what we sometimes pretend to be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So it started to make more sense to me. This training was actual, real honest to goodness, old fashioned...hard work. So much of the other training in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land was only for show. It did not make a &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"&gt;difference&lt;/span&gt; if it did not produce results, just as long as it looked good. There were plenty of excuses for why it did not work. There were plenty of people willing to agree with those excuses. Ego, money and foolishness abound in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I have finally settled with the fact that I train the way that I do because...I simply like it. I know it produces the real world results that I am looking for and as crazy as it sounds, there is something special and magical about it at times. It is a mindset, a way of thinking...how you think about and approach training a dog.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Life truly does go by quickly and I will not get caught up and entangled in the jungles of &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8"&gt;Dogdom&lt;/span&gt; Land. I will not offer up any excuses or apologies for training this way. I don't have to. It plainly says what it says.  Because iniquity... which is the bad moral behavior that people used to be ashamed of.  Things accepted now were not even tolerated in time past.  Because iniquity...more and more people doing worse and worse things.  Truly the moral baseline has dropped very low.  Because so many people are doing, participating and accepting sinful behavior...the love of many shall wax cold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recently I was contacted by an animal control shelter that had a dog that a couple had purchased from me.  They would have faced criminal charges had they not surrendered ownership of the dog.  This dog, who was once robust, healthy and full of joyful energy had become malnourished, aggressive and very &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;skiddish. This was accomplished by tying up the dog with no human contact and only feeding him every 3 or 4 days with hardly any water at all.  When any interaction was made, it consisted of mental and physical abuse such as kicking and hitting the dog.  This dog, who once was so loving and playful, had become aggressive and nervous because of this prolonged, cruel treatment.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Abuse like this has always been going on, it is nothing new.  However, today it is much more prevalent.  Much more widespread.  Much more accepted and tolerated.  This couple who bought this dog and promised to give him a good life are grossly overweight.  That in itself speaks volumes of who they are.  I observed their children, who were misbehaving the entire time and speaking very disrespectfully to their parents.  There was no discipline from their parents.  Again, this speaks volumes of who and what they are.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, this couple represents a vast majority of what America has let itself become.  Their love for each other, themselves and their children has, "waxed cold."  They do not treat each other or their children with respect or love.  So, to treat a dog cruelly does not bother them at all.  They do not loose any sleep over the cruel treatment they have inflicted on one of God's greatest gifts to us...the dog.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look around and see how people treat people.  Is it no surprise then that animals suffer cruelty at our hands.I understand spiritually why this is happening.  I don't like it though.  Especially to the innocent...children, the elderly, those who cannot take care of themselves.  Dogs are way down on the list.  But it does not lessen the fact of how wrong and cruel it is. I will not accept or tolerate this and will always do what I can to prevent and change this. It is as though a big mirror is held up in front of you , for you to view.  Not just any old mirror that merely shows one's reflection. This is a special mirror.   It will show you your insides, who you really are and what you are.  Now, this can be a really good thing or a very bad thing.  It is solely up to the person in the mirror.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All too often this special mirror will reveal to me that I am too impatient, too quick to get angry while training my dogs.  Being a typical dork human, sometimes when I see that not too pleasant - but honest - reflection of myself, I ignore it.  Pretend that I did not see it, or make an excuse to justify the reason for the reflection.  Sometimes though,  I step back and appreciate what the mirror has just revealed to me.  I then make a conscious decision to change me, so as to change that reflection.  These are the good and bad points of this special mirror.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I am honest with myself and see an image in this mirror that I know should not be in there, I can change it right then and there.  Right then I can make that decision.  This I know, dogs are very good at reading our body language and looking at our insides and knowing what we are feeling.  If we are angry...they know.  If we are happy...they know.  Scared, excited, hesitant, fearful, tired ...they do know.  We cannot hide it, but...that does not mean we have to be that way.  For example:  When your dog does something or does not do something we want, do we always have to get angry?  No.  Do we get angry at times?  Yes.  But can we train and condition ourselves not to get angry?  ABSOLUTELY!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This special mirror not only reveals if you are angry, it shows when you are impatient, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;miscommunicating&lt;/span&gt;, or treating your dog unfairly.  It also shows you when you are happy, patient, communicating correctly and treating your dog fairly.  The key to benefiting from this special mirror is to simply be honest with yourself when looking into it.  This is a very valuable mirror if used correctly.  On the other hand, if one disregards what they see in this mirror, soon their reflection will start to fade and eventually the mirror will not show you anything.  This very useful tool will be gone.  It is very hard and humbling sometimes to honestly look at the reflection that is presented to us.  But in order to better ourselves, it is needful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A funny thing about this special mirror is that if you choose to ignore the reflections presented to you, it does not prevent others from seeing them, including your dog.  So, humble yourselves and look closely at this mirror.  Not only will your handling skills increase for the better, you just might become a better person. But we will see that future life; then and there we, like the birds, will have those beautiful, clear eyes ourselves." Martin Luther&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I came across this quote the other day and it really had me laughing! How true! Just think, if there were only 1000 dogs in America instead of 53 million, not one of those dogs would be homeless and roaming the streets. If one did get loose and were roaming about, someone would surely stop and pick it up. We would do that because they would be so valuable to us. We would not take them for granted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or,what if there was only one dog in all the world? How people would be amazed at all of the great things this creature was capable of. You could tell it to search for a lost child and this creature would enthusiastically search and find that child. Or the sense of security those blessed with having this one dog would feel. A guardian of the night to warn them and protect them from danger in the night. How many millions of people worldwide would wish to have this creature called a "dog".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, when you are with your dog - take stock in exactly how marvelous he really is! Appreciate their natural, God given abilities. When I was a young child, I embarked on a lengthy campaign to convince my mother that I needed a dog. I spent weeks trying to convince her how emotionally scarred I would be for the rest of my life, if I did not have a dog to grow up with. She could not resist my arguments and finally gave in. To this day I have not loved a dog more or had a closer bond to any dog than that dog - &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;Shotzie&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. I did not want her for hunting, protecting, tracking or any other particular reason. I just wanted a dog because my young heart and young eyes saw clearly the wonders of "dogs." We had such a strong bond between us because of the value I placed on her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Being a kid myself once, and being blessed with raising 5 right now, has taught me this: Children naturally look at the world around them with young eyes. They see the wonders of God's creation and get great joy from it. It is as we get older that we take all of that for granted and lose that joy which is all around for us to freely enjoy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Show me an old person who is genuinely happy, and I'll show you a person who believes in God and still knows how to look at things with young eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, all you old and young farts out there, try looking at your dog with "young eyes" again. Fully appreciate the great gift from God that they are. Then, don't stop there. Look at your spouse, children and your life with those same young eyes. To give honor and recognition to their sacrifices and to acknowledge their service to our country.  I also will stand in line to say, "Thank You!".  "Thank You" to everyone who has worn the uniform of the United States Military.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But now, even now, with the wars going on, I believe that the majority of Americans take their &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;battle fought&lt;/span&gt; freedoms for granted.  I know this from the very fact that little concern is voiced as these liberties are being taken away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just imagine how the Patriots who won the Revolutionary War would have reacted if they had the foresight to see just how much the average American is taxed.  Wasn't that one of the main reasons for which they whipped Britain?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about the soldiers who fought in World War I and II, Korea and Vietnam?  What and how do they feel when they see America dealing with our enemies as "friends"?  American companies knowingly selling their advanced technologies to these enemies of ours, fully aware that they will be used against our men and women in uniform.  And for who?  And for what?  More money!  What happened to the true, old fashioned "American Spirit"?  Where is that unity that once was commonplace in America?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This know for sure, that without Almighty God and the American Soldier, the United States of America would not exist today.  If you do not believe that statement, you are an ignorant fool.  Make no mistake, America has many enemies, within and without.  Many of whom would rejoice to see America burning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take heart though, and rest in this fact.  For over 200 years America has produced the Warriors that she needed to protect her.  It is not a job for just anyone.  These Warriors are special in their own way.  Your job, as an American, is to find, identify and expose the enemies within.  Who are some of these enemies to the American way?  Politicians; they &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;enact&lt;/span&gt; unjust laws that strip our blood earned freedoms away.  Businessmen; they sell the soul of America for a few more dollars.  Let your voice be heard.  Do not remain silent.  One person can make a difference.  History has proved that time and time again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, keep all of these soldiers, these Warriors, in your prayers and on your mind!  Thank them when presented the opportunity.  A handshake, helping hand, smile, letters, donations and gift packages.  They do so much for so little.  Honor them by being and remaining a true American.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember these words you spoke:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice &lt;em&gt;for all&lt;/em&gt;."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Honor what it means to be an American.&lt;br /&gt;Honor what they fought and died for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To all those Warriors, the American Soldier, past, present and future:  We here at Liberty K9 want you to know that we are eternally grateful for everything that you have done, are doing, and will be doing. In other words, if I base my opinion of you by talking to your neighbor to get his opinion of you...I am that man of no substance, character and no honor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People do this all the time. They are weak individuals who can't stand on their own two feet. They blindly follow along with the masses, the "in" group. They are content to stand with the group, to blend in. They won't, nor can, they stand on their own. They are afraid of the spotlight focusing on them. They are so easily swayed. They are like a ship lost out at sea, with no sails or motor. They go where the wind and waves tell them to go. I have no use, nor respect, for such individuals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What has this to do with dog training, you ask? Everything. There has always been a right way to do things, and a wrong way to do things. So many people in "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;dogdom&lt;/span&gt; land" just read the opinions of men, but never prove it or test it out on the field or streets. They just accept it as gospel because "so and so" said it, and "what's his name" agrees. For some reason, they are afraid to form an opinion, because they just might have to stand alone. What if they don't agree with "so and so"? What if "what's his name" makes fun of him or speaks bad of him? What if they are ridiculed or talked badly about? They are far more concerned with what others think of themselves, than to actually knowing the truth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know of dog trainers who are not that way. They have learned things by, get this...actually doing things. Imagine that! They have listened to what others have said, tried what others have said. They have kept what has worked and discarded the rest. They are not afraid to stand alone if they believe they are right. Being ridiculed, talked badly about, and made fun of doesn't bother them. They are not swayed by the opinions and commentaries of those who do not know. The actions of their dogs speak loud enough to quiet those who speak ignorantly of things they have not done, nor even attempted to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nowadays, these men are few and far between. Years ago, they were commonplace. But as society has grown weaker, the percentage of weak men has grown also.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen to me, take some "New Year's" advice. Listen to others, but prove it on the field and in the streets of your neighborhood. Don't be afraid to stand alone. My eyes were opened by closing them. I wish I had the talent of some writers, who can so easily express their thoughts on paper. You, as the reader, would then clearly understand what I am about to say. Everyone has turning points in their lives. Things that happen where they are never the same again. Let me tell you one of mine. Let me "try" to tell you one of mine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My dog Clipper and I were up north training at a very special place. We went there for seven days. I was relatively new to this type of work and I only had Clipper for a few months. At the start of our dog/handler bootcamp, both of us were getting used to each other. We were doing all kinds of things that we had never done before. Everyday was something new to learn; new challenges, new discoveries, new talents that I didn't know she or I had.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It wasn't about all of the mistakes I was making, which were many. It wasn't about the poor handling skills I had. It was about all of the great stuff that mentally, physically and spiritually that I was learning. It truly was one of the best weeks, ever, of my life. Of all the great things that happened that week, there was one moment that stood out. To this day, I can go back in my mind and it is so fresh, so clear, like it happened only yesterday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was day five of a seven day course. A sunny, cool afternoon. We had trained all day, so we were somewhat tired. We were out in the field with a few other dog/handler teams. In the middle of all of us was a really big bonfire. I mean this fire was really big! Our trainer said to me, "I want you to shut your eyes and walk towards the fire." He also said, "And don't open your eyes until I say so."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I think to myself, "Okay, the purpose of this exercise is that as I get closer to the fire, Clipper will pull back and save me from a fiery death.. She will figure out that I am out of my mind, and take charge of the situation." What normal person walks into a fire?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I shut my eyes and we both head toward the fire. Like I said, this was a really big fire, and as I started to get closer I could feel the heat of it more and more. I could hear the crackling and hissing of the flames. I'm still walking , but Clipper has not pulled me back yet...strange?? I knew I had to be getting close. But I was fully confident that she would alert me by pulling back, and as a back up, I knew that Mike would not allow me to walk into the fire. ( I hadn't paid him yet!) So, I was not afraid of the fire, even with my eyes shut. I had two things to keep me from the flames, Clipper and Mike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Still walking...Boy, I could really feel the heat now.&lt;br /&gt;Still walking...No pulling back by Clipper...strange??&lt;br /&gt;Still walking...No "Stop" command from Mike.&lt;br /&gt;Still walking...No pulling, no stop.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think to myself, "Man, I have to be almost in the fire!" Still walking...no pulling back. Then..."STOP!! OPEN YOUR EYES!!" I open my eyes and indeed "I am" almost in the fire! My face was hot from the flames. I look at Mike and he points his finger at me and he says those words that changed my life forever. "You see, that dog would have walked &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;through&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt; that fire with you!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BAMM!! Like a ton of bricks, the realization of what just happened, hit me. Clipper "would have" walked through that fire with me! For a split second, I thought that there was something very wrong with my dog. Why didn't she pull back? Then he says, "Because you were going through that fire, she was going through that fire."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then it all became crystal clear to me. Then I understood. I actually was speechless for about a half an hour. All I could do was shake my head, grin and cough out a laugh or two. The glean from Mike's eyes told me he knew exactly what I was feeling. You see, not only was I physically walking towards and through that fire, but I was one hundred percent mentally and inwardly walking towards and through that fire. I was that way from the confidence I had in Clipper and Mike to warn me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the really cool part. Had my eyes been open, Clipper would have pulled me back. Had my eyes been open, my body language would have changed as I got closer and closer to that fire. Had my eyes been open...I would have never had my eyes opened.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was such a lesson for me concerning how we communicate with our dogs in ways other than vocally or through the use of equipment. It comes from the inside of you. What's inside eventually comes outside. My mind and body were walking through that fire - one hundred percent. Had my eyes been open, my mind would have told my body, "Hey! Look at that big ol' fire!" My body would have answered by saying, "I see it!" and would have reacted by slightly changing the way that I was walking toward the fire. My movements would have been hesitant, cautious and somewhat afraid. Clipper, as dogs do so well, would have easily picked up on this and clearly noticed the difference in my body movements. Then, she would have thought to herself, "Hey! Why is he so hesitant, cautious and afraid? Probably because of that big ol' fire in front of us!" Then she would have thought, "I'm not going closer to that thing if he is afraid of it." Then, she would have pulled back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We do this with our dogs much too often. We tell them one thing, but send completely opposite signals via our emotions, body language, equipment...etc... Then, when the dog does not respond how we wish him to, we "unfairly" and "ignorantly" correct the dog. We get all aggravated, which worsens the situation. That would be like me telling you to go left "or" right at the corner. Then, when you turned left, I would yell at you and hit you because I wanted you to turn right. What kind of idiot would you think I was? How does your dog think of you?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All this was made clear to me when he said, "That dog would have walked through that fire with you!" That's why I couldn't talk, but only savour what I had just learned. I'll always remember Mike smiling at me because he knew what I had just learned and experienced. Ever since that moment, I've been hooked on this type of training. It has given me similar moments like this one and taught me much. But that one was special, as it opened up a new world to me, so to speak. It introduced me to a way of training that is so much more than just dog training. So much more than to just give a dog a treat. So much more that shocking a dog. So much more...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So remember this story and apply the philosophy of it in your training. I believe a dog can see the true "inside of you" by your outward actions. Sometimes we think that we can hide them from them. Just like a little child trying to hide something behind his back. But you can't, so just be genuine and honest. Be aware that you just might be giving your dog opposite directions to choose from. You just might be telling him to go left "or" right. What's a Spork? You know what it is, you've seen them before.  It is that eating utensil that really is not a fork, nor is it really a spoon.  So, it cannot be used fully as a fork, nor fully as a spoon.  Now, you are probably thinking to yourself, "What the heck does a Spork have to do with dogs?" Let me explain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the past few years, as technology has increased, I've come across many similar devices. Things changed so as to be better.  For example, someone redesigned my favorite chainsaw a while ago.  They made it so that a person could easily and quickly adjust the chain tension.  A good idea on paper, but...   I no longer use my favorite chainsaw because of this "improvement."&lt;br /&gt;New toilets are designed to save water.  Someone explain to me how we are saving water when we have to flush two, or sometimes three times, to get things down.  Look around you, you will find many Sporks.  Our education system has given us new Math, new Reading and new Writing.  Again, someone explain to me why our children's test scores are far worse than what they used to be.  Where is the improvement?  I am all for improving something, but if it does not work, go back to what did work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, what does a Spork have to do with dogs?  Everything.  First off, let me say this. Dogs have not changed.  Dogs have always been dogs and dogs will always be dogs.  People have changed.  There are alot of human Sporks walking around town right now.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Down through the ages, those who have actually worked dogs have developed ways to train, communicate with and breed these working dogs.  The field was the test and the dog was the proof.  If something worked, they used it.  If not,  they didn't.  If they tried something new and it did not give them the intended  results... they would not hesitate to stop the "new" thing.  Pride was not the issue.  The work was.  The dog was.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today we have multitudes of educated, smart people that have come up with new ways to train man's best friend.  They have gone to school and studied for years, learning all of the new scientific ways to better train your dog.  They have written book after book, study after study.  They have come up with many new "Sporks" in order to better train our dogs.  They are really proud of themselves.  Everybody tells them so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Someone tell me why then, do we have so many poorly trained dogs all over the place?  Why are there so many accidental bites?  Where are the true working dogs?  Why are so many police K9's put down?  Why are dogs getting physically injured while doing simple work?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'll tell you why...People are idiots! They are like sheep, they blindly follow the crowd.  If the majority of people are doing something, right or wrong, they follow along.  They spend much more time in front of a computer or reading a book about dogs, than actually working  their dogs.  They are not out in the field or street where the true learning takes place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've met many dog trainers in my days, and in my opinion, the best, true "dogmen" were always&lt;br /&gt;mavericks.  They never went with the crowd, unless the crowd was right.  They were only concerned with what actually worked.  They were not afraid for one moment of being ridiculed, talked about or labeled.  They were always out there &lt;em&gt;doing, &lt;/em&gt;instead of talking about doing.  They were not afraid to make mistakes because they knew that they would learn from those mistakes.  They listened more to those with worn B.D.U.'s and calloused hands, than those in suits with soft hands. It was simple to them; Spend time with your dog to learn about your dog.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is not what we&lt;em&gt; say &lt;/em&gt;that matters...It's what "Truly is" that matters.  Listen to everyone, but prove it on the field, in the street, in the smoke of battle and in your dog. It is most assuredly the cornerstone in you, as a dog handler.  How you think about dogs and the way that you interact with them is your greatest asset in training; or it can be your greatest hindrance.  This "inner-attitude" is how you truly view the human/dog bond.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To keep things simple, let's divide up the handlers into three seperate groups.  First, you have those who attach many human emotions and feelings to their dogs.  They refer to them as their "babies" and really mean it.  They dress them up in sweaters and various outfits and throw them lavish doggie birthday parties. They will spend hundreds of dollars on their dogs and you need a crow bar to pry a penny from them for a hugnry child.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next group are those on the opposite end of the scale.  They have a dog, but hardly acknowledge it's existence.  They won't spend one minute in training, yet will expect a perfectly well trained dog.  They will constantly beat and hit that dog when he does not live up to their expectations.  Their hands are cruel and their hearts are cold. They don't even care about or give the basic necessities of food, water, shelter and love. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The middle group is where I believe the good dog handlers to be - the only place where any real, lasting, effective training takes place.  These people view dogs as God intended dogs to be viewed... as dogs.  They are not cruel to their dogs, nor do they baby them.  They love their dogs, but love their children more.  They are not afraid to physically correct their dogs when justified. They have their dog's best interests at heart. Because of that they have well-trained, obedient dogs that will gladly work for them all day long.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now each of these groups of people have different "inner-attitudes" toward their dogs, resulting in greatly varied interactions between dog and handler. Which group are you in?  Do you bribe your dog and make excuses when they bite the neighbors child? Do you kick and hit your dog for simply being a dog?  Or do you spend time with your dog daily and seek out others with knowledge in how to properly train dogs?  Are you  afraid to change your attitude when you realize your methods or way of thinking were incorrect? Do you enjoy those moments when you and your dog advance together in training? The body is at Liberty, when not confined; The will or mind is at Liberty, when not checked or controlled. A man enjoys Liberty, when no physical force operates to restrain his actions or volitions.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, go back and read that all over again, slowly, and fully take in what it means. Then, let's go back to the fall of 1774 in early America when the First Continental Congress met. Tensions were very high between the Colonists and Britain. Britain was continually imposing taxes and laws to supress and enslave the early Americans. The Boston Tea Party had already taken place. The Colonists had tried talking to, petitioning, resisting and even begging Great Britain to see things their way. All their efforts were in vain. When the first Congress met, they declared their opposition to the repressive Acts of Parliament, saying that they "ought not to be obeyed." They desired Liberty and freedom; Britain was saying, "No way." Alot of the early Americans were being pushed passed their limits. Some did not know what to do, some were afraid to do anything, and some, like Patrick Henry, knew what needed to be done. So, in March of 1775, resolutions were presented by Patrick Henry putting the colony of Virginia "into a posture of defense...embodying, arming and disciplining such a number of men as may be sufficient for that purpose..."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But before they voted on this, people were allowed to give their opinions on what should or needed to be done. After some gave their opinion that they should continue with the present course, and continue to try and reason with Great Britain, Patrick Henry got up and gave this speech at St. John's Church in Virginia. He spoke with no notes, from his heart and spoke louder as his words continued.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try and picture yourself in that church back then. Everyone wanting to be free of the constraints that burdened them. But what could you do? Britain was so big and powerful. Alot of people felt hopeless and too scared to do anything. These are the words that Mr. Henry spoke that day:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;"No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The questing before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us: they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne! In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free-- if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending--if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained--we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of hosts is all that is left us!&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable--and let it come! Most of you know what happened next; The American Revolutionary War! Of course, we won our independence...our Liberty. Many, many men and women fought for that Liberty with their lives, so theirs and others could live free. And no matter what anyone says, Almighty God, the Christian God of the Holy Bible, was in the forefront of the minds and on the lips of those brave early American warriors. They did not separate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is for this reason and reasons like it that I have named my training facility "Liberty K9." In honor of those men and women like Patrick Henry who stood for a righteous cause. Who were not swayed at the odds of winning or losing, but only knew what was right. Trusting in the God of Heaven to lead them down the right path. This, my friends, is the foundation of the United States of America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, 232 years later, that foundation has weakened and is being tested from within and without. Right now history is being made as Americans are given choices and being tested. Where do you stand? What do you believe? This I do know, without God, without Liberty...the United States of America will not be able to stand. God is here...Liberty will have to be cherished and defended at all times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To all of the present American warriors who fight courageously for that Liberty...Thank you and may God Bless you and protect you. To all of the politicians, judges and those in authority; Do what's right for the country and give honor to the memory and all the Americans that have shed their blood and given their lives so that you, me and all of us may live in freedom...in Liberty. And to each and every American - get your head out of the sand, wake up and look around. Look at your freedoms that have been taken away and are still being taken away. Remember what it took to give you those freedoms and the sacrifices made to purchase them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be strong, stand up for what is right, remember the courage of Patrick Henry. They have communication.  They have an understanding.  This team does not have to be a seasoned Police K9 Unit, nor an elite military team.  This team can be as simple as a child and his dog.  An elderly shut in and her little lapdog.  A service dog and his handler.  Any combination where a human and canine have connected through communication forging a deep bond - kept alive through love and trust and respect.  Dogs are so great at this.  They will go as far as you want to go.  What other creature will so enthusiastically try to please you?  A true Dogman, whom I've had the honor of being on his field, once told me that God had placed the dog here to be of service to mankind.  To watch over him, protect him, comfort him.  So, when you look at that young pup so full of energy - stop and really tell yourself that this dog wants to please you.  He wants to do what you want him to do.  Only if you, as the handler, can communicate that to him.  Simple...right?  If you totally desire something from a dog - you can have it.  You have to truly believe that.  You cannot fake it.  It's a lifetime of communication.  Left alone on a deserted island, just you and your dog and the elements.  You most assuredly would develop a deep bond through communication and love.  Why?  Because it would be real; you would have real needs, real work.  In being with your dog in day to day living - remember all this is real to him.  You are always training - good or bad - you're always training.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dogs see us as we are.  So just relax and just be you.  Develop that special bond between you and your dog. Should it be to impress someone who might be watching?  To run the course as quickly as possible?  What should be the mindset of the handler when doing agility work?  His main goal is to develop and enhance the communication between his dog and himself while under various levels of stress, both him and his dog.  That should be the paramount reason to attempt any type of agility work.  Having fun with your dog is also important.  But, while you are having fun, you're communicating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As life itself offers many obstacles, it's how you deal with them that matters most.  Agility promotes confidence in the dog and the acceptance of stress.  It builds a trust and bond between the handler and his dog.  It teaches the dog to take direction from the handler while he is under stress.  It is a progressive, building-block type of training.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's good to start a pup of 6 to 8 weeks in agility.  Bearing in mind his age and capabilities.  This is the beginning of you and your dog's life together.  You both need to learn how to communicate with each other.  Your dog will speak to you - you must learn how to listen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Agility teaches the dog to take direction from the handler while on all different types of surfaces.  Moveable objects, high objects - or subterranean obstacles; there are so many natural and man man obstacles all around you.  The more you look for them the more you will see.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Always give your dog your full, undivided attention while doing this agility work.  You'll see the difference as time goes by.  Your dog will be better at tracking, protection work, more stable.  Always remember why you are doing agility work and always have that positive attitude.  Remember, communicate with your dog.  Listen to your dog.  Even when not speaking to him - you're speaking to him! How then does the novice dog handler know what to do, what to believe and what to expect? I, in no way, am going to say that I have all the answers or the best way to train all dogs. What I do believe I have is a simple, time-tested philosophy to apply in training all dogs. This is also a way of training that I have only scratched the surface on. It is so much more than teaching a dog a command to do something. It is a journey on trying to communicate with our faithful companions. It's a way of thinking that applies to every aspect of dog training - and our lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Picture this: You and your dog somehow get stranded out in the wilderness. Small hope that you could ever get out, and even smaller hope of anyone finding you. It is just you and your dog. You and your dog are trying to survive in the wilds.  The first thing that would happen is that it would be very real to you.  Everything you did would have a purpose.  Not only would you be speaking from your voice, you would be speaking from your heart.  Your dog would know this without a doubt.  If some kind of animal attacked you - both of you would fight to protect the other.  If you were just walking somewhere - both of you would be tuned into each other.  Walking as a team.  The pain in your stomach would make hunting for food real.  You would not have to give your dog a treat to be like this.  Nor would you have to throw his favorite toy/ball to get him to protect you.  Doing so would seem utterly foolish to you.  Everything would have purpose.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So much of dog training today is done completely opposite of this.  Dogs are bribed through their stomach or forced through their skin.  The dog knows no real sense of purpose, it feels none from you.  During training, your mind is on other things not related to the task at hand.  Instead of a team - you are seperate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The handler must give his full attention to his dog when doing any type of training.  Your dog will know if you are or aren't. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You must have a seriousness of purpose.  Each exercise must be a progressive step towards better, complete communication.  You cannot force it nor ignore it.  You must have patience - quick tempers and anger never go hand-in-hand in dog training.  Always be quick to look for faults in yourself - for they &lt;em&gt;are&lt;/em&gt; there.  Your dog knows them and he still loves you.  You must first acknowledge them, then correct them.  This is what's so great about this type of training.  It is a wonderful walk of self-discovery - all along your loyal friend by your side.
